Radiation Therapy Advances in Anaplastic Astrocytoma Treatment

Radiation therapy plays a critical role in managing anaplastic astrocytoma after surgical intervention. Because residual tumor cells almost always remain, radiation is essential in targeting microscopic disease.


Modern radiation techniques allow for precise tumor targeting while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue. Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) improve accuracy and reduce side effects.


Treatment typically spans six weeks, delivered in small daily doses. Patients may experience fatigue, hair loss in the treated area, or mild cognitive changes. Supportive care measures help manage these side effects.


Emerging technologies such as proton therapy are being explored for their ability to limit radiation exposure to healthy brain structures. Although not universally available, proton therapy may benefit selected patients.


Radiation remains a foundational component of the therapeutic approach, enhancing tumor control and delaying progression.
